Frequently asked questions
We are open by appointment Mon-Fri - Saturday and Sunday, we are open 1:00pm-4:00pm
To surrender a bird, please fill out the surrender form at https://www.beak-n-wings.com/surrender-form once we receive the form, someone will contact you as soon as possible.
While we appreciate when cages are donated, the ability to provide a cage with a surrendered bird does not effect our ability to intake a bird. If you are unable to surrender the cage or toys, please try and bring the birds favorite toy so they won't feel as lost.
All of our birds live in approved foster homes or will stay at our facility. In order to be a foster with BNW, a foster must have a completed home visit, attend the Basic Bird Care 101 class. Membership is REQUIRED to be a foster home with BNW. Fosters are required to bring their foster bird out to no less than 1 event a month. We make sure all of our fosters have had training on important and vital things to remember when caring for a parrot.
Because we rely on our foster network, and space available at the facility to house the birds in our care, the wait time can vary. This process is dependent upon the species, number of birds being surrendered. Once a foster home is available, our intake team will reach out to you to make arrangements to drop off the bird and any cages/toys/food you wish to donate. Most of the time we can take in the bird (s) within a day to a week.
Yes! Our Foster Team will make sure you are equipped with the knowledge and skills to care for your foster bird. Membership required
While there are many ways to help, cleaning cages and caring for the birds is one of the biggest needs at the facility. Cage cleaning and bird care are performed by our foster families in their personal homes. You can go to https://www.beak-n-wings.com/volunteer-form and sign up to become a volunteer. You can see all of our opportunities at https://www.beak-n-wings.com/about-7-1 our most needed positions needed are located at https://www.beak-n-wings.com/help-wanted
Glad you asked! We appreciate supply and cage donations, depending on the size, condition and availability in our facility. To ensure the health and safety of our parrots, cages must be rust free and damage free. If there are broken bars or doors, we will not be able to accept the cage. If the cage is in safe condition, please send us a picture, approximate size. We will connect you with a nearby volunteer to arrange drop off of the donation.
One of our favorite things do to at BNW is interact with the community and educate the public on parrots and parrot care. We love showing off our birds! We are always looking for outreach opportunities. Whether an outreach/educational event at schools & community programs or fundraising at markets, fairs, or restaurants, we are always happy to take our birds places and introduce them to the world! https://www.beak-n-wings.com/invite-us-for-a-program submit the form to BNW then we will contact you to discuss your idea!

The adoption fee does not cover anything aside from the bird. As a nonprofit, our cages are utilized for the foster birds in our care and are primarily obtained by donations. Sometimes we have cages available for purchase for smaller birds (like cockatiels or budgies), but we always encourage applicants to prepare for the cost of having a bird, including the cage. For larger birds like cockatoos and macaws, this can mean a large purchase of $500 or above.
Adoption fees help cover the veterinary costs for the birds in our care, food, some toys, perches, and other facility accumulated debits.
Adoption fees vary by the species and breed of the bird. You can also go to https://www.beak-n-wings.com/adoptable-birds which will get you to pet finder. The fees for each bird is listed in the bio of the bird.
Home visits are conducted to ensure that the environment our birds are potentially being placed in is safe, clean, and properly set up to welcome a new feathered family member. Reviewing the living situation provides our team with much needed information to determine what bird would be a good fit, what further education needs to be provided, and if the environment would be safe for our adoptable friends. For more information regarding home visits, please see our Adoption Process page https://www.beak-n-wings.com/adoption-process
No. BNW does not ship birds. We will adopt out only 150 miles from our facility.
NO. We will not adopt to a breeder. We understand the argument that birds need to breed, we are not out trying to make more babies to end up in the facility or be abused because breeders normally won't educate the buyer to birds.
BNW is located at 9010 Rosehill, RD., STE B., Lenexa, KS 66215. NO. We are not open during the day time hours. We are open Saturday and Sunday 1-4pm. Check us out on petfinder for a bird you are interested in, send us an email to adopt.bnw@gmail.com so that we can make sure the bird is at the facility when you arrive.
Yes, we will allow you to adopt, however, we will not allow you to adopt a macaw or cockatoo for a first time bird. Smaller birds are a better fit for first time bird people.
Yes! The training class is required for all birds adopted (Conure to Macaw, plus parrotlet). Information has changed a lot from just 2 years ago. If you do not wish to attend the class, you will not be able to adopt from BNW.
We don’t deny people lightly. If we say no, we’ll tell you why—and if you’re willing to address it, we’re open to revisiting the decision. It’s not personal. It’s about the birds.
- You’ve sold birds online (now or in the past) - You breed birds - You already have too many animals - You’re in the Do Not Adopt database - You smoke inside your home - You didn’t follow the process - You came at us sideways with a bad attitude
-You have had too many birds die in your home
Nope. Every bird—whether fully feathered or plucked, young or old, abled or special needs—deserves the same shot at happiness. They all eat, destroy toys, and need vet care. We don’t do haggling. Please don’t ask.
